PCL reconstruction surgery is a procedure to replace a torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in the knee.

Posterior Cruciate Ligament Anatomy

The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), one of four major ligaments of the knee, is situated at the back of the knee. It connects the thighbone (femur) to the shinbone (tibia). The PCL limits the backward motion of the shinbone.

What are PCL Injuries?

PCL injuries are very rare and are typically caused by higher energy injuries like car crashes, etc.. Other ligament injuries often occur in combination with PCL injuries.

Causes of PCL Injuries

The PCL is usually injured by a direct impact, such as in an automobile accident when the bent knee forcefully strikes the dashboard. In sports, it can occur when an athlete falls to the ground on a bent knee. Twisting injury or overextending the knee can cause the PCL to tear.

Treatment Options for PCL Injuries

Treatment options may include non-surgical and surgical treatment. Non-surgical treatment can be appropriate for partial injuries or when a PCL injury occurs without other ligament injuries. Physical therapy and a brace are typically recommended. Surgical intervention is recommended when other ligament injuries occur with the PCL injury or when someone fails conservative treatment of an isolated PCL injury.

PCL Reconstruction Procedure

The procedure is typically conducted arthroscopically and involved drilling tunnels in the femur and tibia and placing a tendon graft. The graft typically comes from a donor and it is rigidly fixed on each bone.
